Summer Board Report 2008 District VI

District VI has been working very hard this summer. They have been coming up with new, informative and enjoyable programs for their club are meetings. They have been working very hard at putting together their yearbooks. Even though they have been looking forward to starting new projects and programs they have not stop working the projects, such as flower beds and flower shows, they always work on.

We had a very enjoyable and informative Presidents meeting on June 3, 2008. It was hosted by the Baton Rouge Garden Club in Baton Rouge. Since the president's meeting is supposed to be about giving information to the club president's and club members we did not have a formal program. Instead we had two smaller more informative programs.

The first one was; several members of the host garden club took a table and did a functional tablescape design on it. The members who did the table designs explained to those attending the meeting what they had done, why they had done it and other interesting things about their designs. Each person who attended actually got to eat off of the table settings. That was fun and educational.

For the second part of the program, each club was asked to give ideas for programs, projects fund raisers and other things that their clubs were doing. Since the clubs were starting to work on their year's programs and projects, there were a lot of pens and pencils being used. The members shared a wide variety of ideas. Some of the ideas shared were: Programs on herb from edible ones to growing them in pots to painting the pots to plant them in; Dipping and waxing camellias; Flower shows; Touring your town's historic district and Flower arraigning programs to help get ready for flower shows. Plant sales, style shows and flower shows for fund raisers. Clubs shared some of the names of places and people who had done programs for them. A couple of the clubs shared what they had done for projects at nursing homes in their communities. One club explained what they were doing to get new members for their club. If the club presidents did not get at least one very good idea to take back to their club they must have been sleeping.

Now we are looking forward to our District VI Fall meeting. It will be held in Slidell on October 14, 2008. The Greater Slidell Council of Garden clubs, Inc. is working hard on that. The theme is "Just My Cup of Tea". The program will be on the different types of teas and their uses. As anybody who has ever attended our fall meeting knows we usually have a few other fun things up our sleeves too. Please come and join us.
