June Garden of the Month

GARDEN OF THE MONTH FOR JUNE. Home and Garden club member Kathy Andre, left, placed the Garden of the Month sign in the Thomas family's lovely landscaped vision of beauty at 806 Lanora Street. Grant Thomas, age seven, holds the sign as Stephanie and Daniel Thomas pose for a photo for this special event with little Bryson, age two. Their front lawn area is beautified with lovely red caladiums and white laced caladiums, many unique green shrubs, and a bounty of colorful blooming plants of all shades throughout the front lawn, with a well-groomed lawn which also captivated the judges. The bird bath adds interest and elegance to the flower bed as well as protecting the birds with water. Congrats to Stephanie and Daniel, who are great gardeners! Thank you for making our town more beautiful! This monthly contest is co-sponsored by Franklinton Home and Garden Club, Club President Dana Truxillo; The Franklinton Chamber of Commerce; and the Franklinton Town Council. Submitted by Minnie Posey.

SONIC RECIEVES BUSINESS OF THE MONTH AWARD

The Sonic Drive-In is all sizzling with patriotism for the Fourth of July! It is decorated with a red, white and blue patriotic theme, using American flags, banners, pinwheels, patriotic figures and lovely colorful flower beds. Marguerite Lipani and Minnie Posey, Home and Garden Club members, presented the July Business of the Month award signs to business owner Rachel Gill, standing on far right side; and with her is Donna Schilling in the center. Lipani is on the left. Sonic has really been motivated to make their business look great and has improved their flower beds with color and greenery. They have planters located at the front of the building to enhance the business. The trees are very lovely, giving shade to the outside table areas. It is very noticeable and captivating that they are all decorated with a patriotic theme for our great annual celebration of the Fourth of July. They definitely are letting us know they love the USA! Keep up the great job! We appreciate you for helping to make our town look great! The Business of the Month contest is co-sponsored by the Home and Garden Club of Franklinton, club president, Dana Truxillo; The Franklinton Chamber of Commerce, and the Franklinton Town Council.

Latane Alford donates beautiful quilt to Washington Parish Garden Club Council

On Thursday, May 8, Latane Alford of Mt. Hermon, a member of Home and Garden Club, donated a special quilt made by the Garden Clubs in Louisiana. Latane was the fortunate winner of that quilt several years ago and chose to donate it to the Washington Parish Garden Club Council. President Minnie Posey of the Council accepted the donation from Mrs. Alford.

The quilt has the names of all the Garden Clubs, as each club made their own monogrammed block stating the name of their club. The quilt has a white backing and light green color on the opposite side with white blocks made by each club. The coveted quilt is a special gift to us because of Mrs. Alford’s love for the Parish Fair and of all the garden clubs throughout the parish. Her wish is to share in this special way this wonderful gift to us, and the Council appreciates her donation of the quilt.  The lovely quilt will be on display at the 2008 Washington Parish Fair at the Flower House in the Center of Interest, according to Minnie Posey, president of the Washington Parish Garden Club Council. The Council has already made plans for a great flower show under the theme of the fair, "Down Home Celebration." According to Posey, you do not want to miss this year’s flower show. We want the whole family to come and visit. The Council truly appreciates Mrs. Latane for all her beautiful designs over the years at the fair. Her love of gardening has inspired many individuals in the parish and in our state. She will always be recognized as the Washington Parish "Flower Lady." She has been an inspiration to everyone over the many years!

The Washington Parish Garden Club Council consists of six garden clubs in the parish, which meet and make plans for all the activities for the Flower House under the umbrella of the Washington Parish Fair Association. This year Vaiden Barlow of Bogalusa is serving as chairman of the Fair Flower Show and Janet Baham of Franklinton will serve as co-chairman. Minnie Posey will serve as honorary chairman.
