Genesis Award - January and
February
Gardenettes
of Ponchatoula Member Maria Griener hands the Genesis Award to Dr.
David Cranford, Senior Pastor at the First Baptist Church of
Ponchatoula.
|
The
Gardenettes of Ponchatoula recently chose the First Baptist Church of
Ponchatoula, located at 325 E. Pine Street, to receive the Genesis
Award for the months of January and February. This award is
presented to businesses in the Ponchatoula area with exemplary
landscapes.
The new gardens at the church, installed by Prestige One Landscaping,
include variegated gingers, oak leaf hollies, spiral junipers,
loropetalums, Old Timey Snowball viburnums, and various under-story
groundcover plants in a sweeping curve design along the sides
and front of the church. The raised beds also accent the
office spaces, which used to be the original church, built in the
1920s. The First Baptist Church of Ponchatoula traces its
roots to 1900, but it did not officially organize until 1915.
There were thirty-five members at that time. Current
membership is about twelve hundred individuals.
Church members decided to funnel funds for the years 2012-2013 into a
Curb Appeal Project, and the Gardenettes of Ponchatoula applaud them
for what they have done thus far. Near-future plans are in
place to install more gardens around a new digital sign and also around
the Education Building along Fourth Street. Congratulations,
First Baptist Church of Ponchatoula for helping to beautify our lovely
town! |

Garden of the Month - Dec. 2012
In a home built in 1948 by her grandfather former Ponchatoula mayor and
fire chief John Dahmer, Jamene Dahmer has lived for the past three
years, tending the garden and earning the Gardenettes of Ponchatoula
Garden of the Month award for December. |
| A
former CEO of the Chamber of East St. Tammany and Hammond and currently
the vice-president of Resource Development for United Way, Jamene
researched plants, flowers, and layouts at the LSU Ag Center in Hammond
and with local citizen Kathy Welles. The end result is a
beautiful garden with a variety of color and texture. Bedding
plants of dianthus, pansies, snapdragons, ajuba, daylilies, agapanthus,
and lantana are thriving. Providing a backdrop and height are
ginger, crape myrtles, bottle brush, sweet olive, and
susanqua. Scattered among the full front garden are
frost-proof gardenias, hydrangeas, and knock-out roses.
Statuary and stepping stones further enhance this garden at 250 West
Magnolia. Along the driveway leading to a cottage in the back
are susanqua and azaleas. Pictured on the front porch are
Jamene, her mother, Sheila Reno, who helps with the gardening, and
friend John Fresina, who offers his gardening expertise. |

Garden of the Month - Nov 2012
The
Gardenettes Garden Club of Ponchatoula recognized Sherry Klein of 454
East Oak as the November "Garden of the Month"
recipient.
The quaint cottage style garden is maintained by Sherry
herself.
She shared that her property was once an early brick yard on the east
side of down. Many of the bricks used to contain her flower beds were
dug from the property. Box wood shrubs are planted across the
front of the house and accented with a mixture of annuals of coleus,
periwinkle, pansy and blue liriope. Two oak trees accent the
side
flower beds with ornamental sweet potato vines of the "Blackie" and
"Margarita" variety used as ground covers. Three window boxes
in
front of the house have trailing sweet potato vines also. A
post
to the car port is wrapped with a jasmine vine, and a potted
poinsettia accents a circular flower bed in the center of the
yard. Sherry has a charming bench to sit and rest a while
that
holds an umbrella to shield you from the sun while you relax. |

The
Gardenettes of Ponchatoula held their October meeting at the home of
Gardenette member Lynda Byrd. Co-Hostesses for the meeting were Dale
Rieth, Diane Dufour and Cricket Ayala.
Lynda Byrd’s home was
beautifully decorated with colorful fall décor - autumn leaves,
pumpkins and colorful mums. The weather was cool and the members all
enjoyed the feeling of fall in the air and the beautiful fall designs.
Lynda and her daughter prepared a pot of delicious seafood gumbo and
the aroma filled the air. Many side dishes and desserts complemented
the main dish. After enjoying their meal and socializing, the members
got down to business.
Members present at the meeting were
hostess Lynda Byrd, President Dale Rieth, Diane Dufour, Cricket Ayala,
Margaret Bailey, Kathy Bruce, Diane Dufour, Adrienne Dunn, Vicky
Fannaly, Tonya Ferguson, Maria Griener, Sandra Haro, Debbie Henegan,
Cheryl Kuhn, Aimee Marcombe, Joan Morse, Cynthia Orgeron, Louise
Steadman and Pat Sweeney. The Gardenettes were also joined by several
members of the Community Garden Club - President Peggy Avery, Nell
Richards, Margaret Harding, Flora Nelson and Ellen Pusey.
After
reciting “The Collect” and the Pledge of Allegiance, President Rieth
called the meeting to order. The Treasurer’s Report and Minutes were
read and approved. Sandra Haro displayed a picture of the sewing
machine which she has donated to the club for a fund-raising raffle.
Long-time
member Vicky Fannaly gave a very informative presentation on applying
for the various awards offered by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation.
Members were given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the
criteria for these awards. Margaret Bailey, Horticulture Chairman,
encouraged the members to vote for the members’ Floral Exhibits. Maria
Griener won First Place for her beautiful floral display. Members also
brought many beautiful horticulture specimens for display and
education. Margaret also gave the members some very useful information
on fall bulb planting.
President Rieth read the current
announcements about upcoming events, including a proposed plan for the
members to visit the Audubon Pilgrimage in St. Francisville in the
spring.
Each committee chairman gave a report on the activities
of their respective committees. Sandra Haro announced that the Garden
of the Month Award was given to Julie and Brian Desselles. The members
discussed options for maintaining the gardens at Collinswood and the
Butterfly Garden. Adrienne Dunn, Live Oak Chairman, gave information on
registering oak trees with the Live Oak Society. Joan Morse, who is a
long-time Ponchatoula resident, commented that the oak trees in
Ponchatoula mark an old Indian trail and are quite old. Joan has a
breathtaking oak tree in her front yard that has been registered with
the Live Oak Society for many years. All members of the community can
register their oak trees by obtaining the criteria and other
information at www.louisianagardenclubs.org then click on “Live Oak
Society”.
The Gardenettes then had fun drawing for door prizes. Door
prize winners were Cheryl Kuhn, Adrienne Dunn, Diane Dufour, Kathy
Bruce, Louise Steadman, Cricket Ayala, Debbie Henagan, Lynda Byrd and
Ellen Pusey. A fun and productive time was had by all!
