Be alert, scream as loudly as you can, run away as soon as possible - this was some of the advice offered by Deputy Stacy Newsom guest speaker to the Gardenettes at their October 12 meeting, held in the home of club president Janice Hickey.
Dy. Newsom offers Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Systems classes for women with no experience in physical skills training so they can defend themselves against attack. Sponsored by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Department, this program is three nights long and approximately four hours per night. Second speaker, member Adrienne Dunn gave a talk on hummingbirds and how to help them. Of the 331 known species, 31 have been designated as being at risk. Dunn handed out information on feeding and rescuing them.

Gardenettes are members of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation Inc. (LGCF). Hostesses for the meeting were Patty Mullins, Pat Sweeney, Sandra Haro, Tonya Ferguson and Kathy Bedenbaugh. Door prizes were supplied by Mullins, Haro, Karen Moran, Sweeney, Ferguson and Louise Steadman. Blue ribbon horticulture honors for specimens brought to the meeting were given to Dunn, Mona Middlebrook, Joan Morse, and Margaret Bailey. People’s choice voting went to Bedenbaugh, with Bailey coming in second. Due to the heavy schedule, Cricket Ayala moved to dispense with Secretary Morse’ minutes and abbreviate Treasurer Vicky Fannaly’s report.

Hickey gave the results of the plant sale and thanked Dale Rieth for getting the Gardenette t-shirts that members wore for this event. She thanked everyone for their participation.

Hickey gave a report on the District VI LGCF Fall Meeting held by member Diane Dufour who serves as District Director. Dufour was not present due to her state duties. Present but not previously mentioned were Lynda Byrd, Kathy Bruce, and Cheryl Kuhn.
Middlebrook gave a report on the Butterfly Garden and thanked Robin Austin for her work. She also reported that the Garden of the Month sign had been refurbished and that it would be presented in the coming week. Hickey collected money for the Apotheca Food Bank and Community Coffee labels for the schools. She reported on the Bosom Buddy Bags of which the club made 50. She said that Peggy Avery of Community Garden Club also had bags and the two clubs would deliver the bags to North Oaks the following Wednesday.

Hostesses for the October meeting were Pat Sweeney, Tonya Ferguson, Sandra Haro, Janice Hickey, Kathy Bedenbaugh, Patty Mullins.
