The Ferriday Garden Club is planning a memorial park to enhance the west end entrance into Ferriday. Bayou Memorial Park will be located near Bayou Cocodrie, around a sign currently welcoming people to Ferriday.

Garden Club member and Louisiana Garden Club Federation Treasurer Lena Bateman said the club is seeking a grant from a principal financial group representing the National Garden Club for up to $3,000. The Garden Club, which is planning to put up $1,500, has seven partners also interested in contributions totaling $3,500. The cost of the project is $8,000. The National Garden Club endorses programs which use memorials, patriotism, trees and the Blue Star Marker. "We decided we would incorporate all of that into one," Bateman said.

The park will consist of several "patriotic trees," including redbuds, vitex, dogwood and red maples. There will also be a brick flag stand with seven flags representing the countries Louisiana has served under in the past. In front of the flags will be a Blue Star Marker, which designates a section of highway within the state as a segment of the Blue Star Memorial Highway. A state flag and American flag will be positioned on each side of the welcome sign. Smaller American flags will be flying in the park, with each flag honoring a veteran from the community. "This gives people in the community the opportunity to participate," Bateman said. The park will be lighted. "The flags will come down when they are not being used," Bateman said. "We'll put them up for special occasions."

"We will know by the end of January how much of a grant we will receive," said District V Director Shirley Mondello. "If we can't get all of the grant we requested, then we will do some portion of the project." The project is expected to take two years and is being prepared by C.J., Morace LLC of Vidalia. Bateman is hoping the park will lead to a cleaner Bayou Cocodrie. "We're hoping people will take more pride and we're going to stop all traffic through the area. We want it to be something our visitors and people in the community can appreciate."
