District I's plans
for the 2002 LGCF Convention, "Literary New Orleans," are
on their way to completion and we're just waiting to welcome
you to our great city and a wonderful Garden Club time of
fun and learning.
Prior to the Convention on April 1st, will be a Landscape/Gardening
Consultants Refresher Tour. Joann Christopher, Tour Chairman,
has some wonderful gardens for this fast paced tour and has
planned a fabulous lunch in the garden at Commander's Palace.
Dr. Neil Odenwald will be the tour leader. This tour is open
to Landscape/Gardening Consultants and priority will be given
to those needing to refresh and accredited members. If there
are seats remaining on the tour bus, provisional members,
student members and spouses of tour participants will be welcome.
A brochure will be sent to all Landscape/Gardening Consultants
and the completed registration information will be in the
National Gardener, NGC web site and LGCF web site. Call Joann
at 504-737-2320 if you need information before the brochure
is mailed.
After the busy day of pre-convention meetings on April 2nd,
the Convention Committee invites convention attendees for
a drink or two in the Host Suite from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00.
Part of the Cool Breeze jazz group (led by The Point Garden
Study Club's, Frank Wagner) will be out by the pool to get
us in the New Orleans mood. Dinner is on your own and there
are some of the world's greatest restaurants within walking
distance from the hotel.
Wake up early on Wednesday, April 3rd and come to the Church
Flowers Workshop led by Myra Mehrtens. Learn some of the symbolism
and structure of working with a flower committee and arranging
flowers for special services. This workshop will be in an
enclosed atrium that features some vibrant art works.
Many of us know that Deen Day Smith, immediate Past President
of NGC, is a truly talented designer. So don't miss her program
for the Judges Council Luncheon on the 3rd.
The afternoon promises to be a great time to learn about Old
Garden Roses with expert, Maureen Detweiller. The Old Garden
Rose Society of New Orleans will have roses for sale at this
event.
You will really fall in love with The Moonlit Garden when
you experience Scott Ogden's program at the Landscape/Gardening
Consultants dinner to round off April 3rd.
Brunch on April 4th is an event to especially honor Club Presidents
and Life Members of LGCF, NGC and Deep South Region. Of course,
all members and guests are welcome to this and any event!
Non-competetive awards will be given and Sally Kitteridge
Reeves will present her program on the translation of the
first Louisiana garden book. Don't forget to don your lovely
Easter hat for our brunch - this has become a new tradition,
to honor Club Presidents by carrying on with a respected garden
club tradition of wearing hats.
Lois Shuster, NGC President, will be our special Convention
guest! She is a hands-on President and will participate in
a Leadership Workshop for Club Presidents (and any other member!)
in the afternoon. Just following that a bus will whisk us
away to the Botanical Garden in City Park for a Tea honoring
Lois. The Botanical Garden is so beautiful in the spring and
we hope the new Conservatory will be finished in time for
us.
Lois will bring her NGC message to help us close our Convention
at the Awards Banquet. We all hope that our project or award
application is a winning one and are really excited when our
club's name is called. Come join in that excitement!
Throughout the Convention the Sales Room will be open and
we will have some unique things to pique your interest. The
book written by Deen Day Smith and June Wood, Table Settings
for All Seasons, will be available in the Sales Room. Books
by the other authors, Scott Ogden and Sally Reeves, will be
available immediately before and after their speaking events
and all authors will be happy to sign your copies.
Our Convention Committee hope you will enjoy your visit with
us and so we can wish you a safe journey home, join us for
a continental breakfast in the Host Suite from 8:30 until
9:30 a.m. on April 5th.
"Literary New Orleans" is waiting for you!!
