PAPAYAS
BY: Judy Gardener
Lake Charles Garden Club Member

I like to grow things from seeds, so several years ago when we brought a papaya back from South Texas, I saved the seeds, dried, and planted them. The plants grew as high as our house, and we enjoyed them.

This past summer, we again had a wonderful fruit salad with papaya from South Texas, and I planted a few of the seeds in a flower bed near my patio. I pulled up most of the plants and left one that seemed most hardy.
The plant is now about 6 feet tall and has tiny fruit. The plants like warmth and sunshine, and need a well-drained soil, especially in winter months. They will sometimes tolerate a light freeze, but need to be protected from frost.
