National grade level winners and the National Grand Prize winner was announced at the 2006 National Garden Clubs, Inc. Convention and is posted on the www.symbols.gov website (click here for direct link to the 2006 winners). |
The 2007 Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Contest is dedicated to helping prevent Wildfires. The contest is open to students in grades 1 through 5. The USDA Forest Service and the National Garden Clubs sponsor the contest every year to promote wildfire prevention education and conservation, emphasizing everyone's role of self-responsibility for our environment. Contest Rules are: 1. All
Posters entries must be sponsored by a local Garden
Club. 2. Posters
must feature Smokey Bear OR
Woodsy Owl and must not feature both together. 3. Smokey
Bear posters should be based upon and include Smokey's fire
prevention message ( Only YOU Can Prevent
Wildfires! ). Woodsy Owl posters must be based
upon and include, Woodsy's conservation message
(Lend a Hand - Care for the
Land!). 4. The
entry posters should encourage children to take a personal
role in preventing wildfires or conserving natural
resources. 5. Each
entry should be 11 x 17 inches in
size. Poster board is available in this size. 6.
Materials that can be used: crayons, markers, poster
paints, watercolors, etc. 7. No
three-dimensional posters, computer-scanned or electronically
generated images will be accepted! 8. The
artist's name, address, home phone number, grade level,
school, teacher's name, city and state must be printed on
the back of the poster in the lower right
corner. Each poster must also show on the
back, the name of the sponsoring local Garden Club.
(Do not use a dark marker for this information as it may show
through. Here is a good tip - Print or type the information required onto a large label and place this label on the back of the poster in the lower right corner. Remember: name information cannot be on the front of the poster. 9. The
local garden club must submit poster
entries no later than January 15, 2007 to
State Youth Activities Chairman, Mary Ellen Miller, 306 Garden Road, River Ridge, LA 70123-2004.. 10.
The State Youth Activities Chairman must submit the five state winners (one per grade level) to Regional Chairman by Feb. 15, 2007. Poster
Tips: 1. A good poster
has a bold and simple design. 2. Its message is
delivered both in the picture and in the slogan. 3. Its message is
easily understood. 4. Posters are to
be completed by individual student artists. Competition
may include students from grades 1 to 5. 5. Posters will be judged giving 20% each for originality, design, slogan, artwork, and overall effectiveness of the message. Poster Rights - all entries will become property of the USDA Forest Service Posters will not be returned to contestants. The USDA Forest Service and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. may use the poster artwork for national educational materials and outreach. National Grand Prize
Winner will win a free trip to Washington, DC for an award presentation ceremony. This trip includes round-trip airfare and accommodations for four. A U.S. Savings Bond will be awarded the first place winner for each grade level as well. Local and State Winners will receive award certificates. |
