The "Two Million Trees"
Project is off to a fabulous start! The Louisiana Garden Club
Federation planted 10 times our quota the first year! The
LGCF's goal for 2003 is 4,204 trees. I feel confident that
we will again succeed in the number of trees planted.
I am asking all members to give
me a preliminary report by February 15, 2003, so that our
state will have a good showing in the TMT report at the Deep
South Convention in early March. I will continue to accept
tree plantings until April 15, 2003. National recently notified
me of the change in the date from May 1, 2003 to April 15,
2003. So again, the 2002-2003 year for counting trees is March
16, 2002- April 15, 2003. Please use the "Tree Planting
Forms" (available from your District Director) for your
TMT Projects and send them to your District Directors.
Why not dedicate your Arbor Day
Plantings as "Freedom Trees"? Complete the "Freedom
Trees" Form and return it to Judy Grotts, her address
is at the bottom of the form- also available from your District
Director, or on the Deep South Region Website. Please note
that the completed form must be received by Feb.1, 2003.
The Louisiana Forestry Service is
offering large quantities of seedlings at very reasonable
prices- $25.00/100. Call George Miller at 337-262- 5433 to
request an order form, or log on the LA. Agriculture and Forestry
website to download the forms, and see which trees are still
available. Do not hesitate- quantities are limited.
I encourage all to apply for Award
#17- Arbor Day Certificate of Merit, as well as DSR Award
#9- Tree Planting Award. I know there are many noteworthy
projects being done. Get photos of all your tree planting
activities, put that information into a book of evidence.
Let the DSR know that we are doing a great job here in Louisiana!
Also consider applying for the National Garden Clubs Award
#64- Leaf our Way into Century 21.
